Have you ever been stumped by your children’s questions? I know I have.
My boys sometimes ask such profound questions that I have no answer for. When that happens, my usual reply is either “I don’t know” or “Go ask Daddy”!
If I am not too tired, they will receive a more positive reply such as, “Why don’t we find out more?”
What would you tell your kids if they were to ask you, “How long is eternity?”
I know I’d have a hard time explaining eternity to my kids.
But not anymore.
Thanks to Wild Crane Press, we received this book ‘How Long Is Eternity?’ and I have to say that this is one of the most unusual and thought provoking books I’ve read.
The bilingual hardcover book comes in a sturdy case. When we first opened the book, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it is an accordion book, which makes it really unusual.
The entire accordion book, when fully opened, is really long! The length alone is good enough to act as a visual representation of eternity to young children.
The black-and-white English version is on one side, while the fully-coloured Chinese version is on the other.
But what I really like is the story in that long, accordion book.
‘How Long Is Eternity’ is adapted from ‘The Shepherd Boy’ by the Brothers Grimm. The story of ‘The Shepherd Boy’ goes like this:
The King asked the shepherd boy,
‘How many seconds are there in eternity?’
The shepherd boy replied,
‘In Lower Pomerania, there exists a diamond mountain.
This mountain measures two miles in height, two miles
in breadth, and two miles in depth. Every hundred years,
a bird will come to the mountain and sharpen its beak
on it. By the time the mountain has been worn away
completely, the first second of eternity will have passed.’
‘How Long Is Eternity?’ is the story of a little bird that goes on a journey once every hundred years, to pursue the sun across the sky, from the east to the west. When it reaches the other end of the world, there is an immeasurably vast Diamond Mountain. The little bird sharpens its beak on the peak of the mountain, before going on its return journey from the west back to the east, this time pursuing the moon.
When my kids first opened this book, they were intrigued by the accordion style of the book. What further interested them was the way the words and illustrations were printed on the pages. You have to read the story from left to right, all the way to the end of the length of the accordion book, then rotate the book 180 degrees around and continue reading from left to right again.
This means that the beginning and the ending of the story is on the same page.
The interesting layout of the book makes you feel as if you’re following the little bird on its long journey from one end of the world to the other and back.
When we came to the end of the story, Jay’s eyes popped wide open, when he had a glimpse and a sudden realisation of how long eternity is.
This is a brilliant book. Truly a work of art.
‘How Long Is Eternity?’ is a unique story book that is both visually appealing to kids and thought-provoking to adults. The story left me feeling how fleeting our days on earth are.
